What is BMI?

BMI stands for Body Mass Index. This is a good indication of whether you're a healthy weight for your height. The BMI calculator has four categories - underweight, healthy, overweight and obese.

What is BMI?

Body Mass Index is widely used by physicians and health experts to determine whether a person is underweight, healthy or overweight. Because BMI looks at the relationship between your weight and height, it's often a good indicator of how likely you are to suffer from health-related illnesses due to your weight now and in the future.

More about the BMI categories

Generally experts classify people with a BMI of below 18.5 as underweight; 18.5 to 25 as healthy, 25 to 30 as overweight and over 30 as obese.

Underweight = BMI less than 18.5

Some people are naturally slim, but being underweight from poor nutrition or because of an illness could pose serious health risks. Tiredness, reduced immunity, anaemia, vitamin deficiencies and infertility are some of the illnesses associated with being underweight. People within this category are strongly advised to consult a doctor or healthcare professional before starting any weight loss programme.

Healthy weight = BMI 18.5 to 25

According to BMI guidelines, if a person's BMI falls between 18.5 and 25 they are not at risk of weight-related diseases. To maintain a healthy weight, they should include plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables and enough vitamins and minerals in their daily diet.

Overweight = BMI 25 to 30

Carrying extra weight can put people at risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, infertility, asthma and cancer. Our free Support Programme is designed to help these people lose weight and live a balanced, more active lifestyle.

Obese = BMI over 30

According to BMI guidelines, a person with a BMI over 30 is classified as obese. People within this category are at an increased risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, infertility, asthma and cancer. We recommend persons in this category to consult a doctor or a healthcare professional before starting any weight loss programme.
